Jamahl Harradine sentenced for robbing homeowner and pharmacy on same night

A man who got caught up in the wrong crowd stole a car from a sleeping homeowner before robbing a pharmacy in a “targeted” attack only an hour later.

A young man stole a sleeping homeowner’s car before robbing a pharmacy for prescription medication an hour later, a court heard.

Jamahl Ian Thomas Harradine, 21, was taking drugs and mixing with the wrong crowd when he committed the brazen thefts.

The District Court heard Harradine broke into a house in the early hours of August 5, 2021 while the residents were asleep and stole a wallet, a purse and their Nissan X-Trail from the carport.

He then drove to a Mile End pharmacy in the stolen Nissan with two others.

“Using a tomahawk, you smashed the glass doors and then entered the pharmacy,” Judge Paul Muscat said during sentencing.

The court heard Harradine and the two others stole numerous boxes of Lyrica prescription medication in the “targeted” attack.

The stolen Nissan was later found abandoned in Salisbury, close to where Harradine was staying.

Harradine, of Salisbury, pleaded guilty to two counts of serious criminal trespass and theft.

“You had lost your way following some significant events that affected you. Your life fell apart,” Judge Muscat said.

“You then started using drugs and mixing with some people you shouldn’t have.”

The court heard Harradine had apologised to the victim and his family.

“As you now understand and appreciate, having your home invaded by a total stranger in the middle of the night is a traumatic experience,” Judge Muscat said.

Judge Muscat sentenced Harradine to two years and four months jail, with a non-parole period of 12-months.

The sentence was suspended on a 12-month, $500 good behaviour bond.

Judge Muscat said he hoped Harradine could take the chance and prove he’s learnt from the experience.

“You can do that by becoming a good member of your community, learning your culture and getting back into football next season, and most importantly, staying clear of drugs and not mixing with the wrong crowd,” he said.

“There will be serious consequences for you should you break the law.”
