Jasper Kidd pleads not guilty to Munno Para stabbing

The teenager accused of stabbing his alleged bully in broad daylight, and spraying his girlfriend with capsicum spray, will go to trial.

Tiser Explains: How a criminal trial works

The teenager who allegedly stabbed his “bully” at a northern suburbs shopping centre earlier this year, will face trial.

Jasper Kidd, 18, appeared in the Adelaide Magistrate Court on Thursday, answering his charges of assault and causing harm with intent as not guilty.

Police allege Mr Kidd carried out the brutal stabbing at Munno Para shops in February on Kye Furner, who was rushed to the Royal Adelaide Hospital after bystanders, then paramedics, aided him at the shopping centre.

At an earlier court hearing, police allege Mr Kidd was at the shops with his girlfriend when Mr Furner and his girlfriend approached them.

For the last several years, the court heard, Mr Kidd was allegedly the victim of Mr Furner and his friends who targeted him because of his vulnerability – severe intellectual disabilities and an IQ of 71.

Mr Kidd’s defence counsel told the court at the initial hearing, he along with his family had been subject to “traumatic experiences” from Mr Furner and his friends including being physically assaulted, having their home’s front door kicked in, and their home being broken into.

This then prompted the family to install a $20,000 security system in the home.

“Ultimately, Your Honour, he just does want to be left alone,” said the duty solicitor.

A prosecutor told the court that Mr Kidd allegedly sprayed Mr Furner’s girlfriend with pepper spray at the Munno Para Shopping Centre just after lunchtime before the two men engaged in a physical altercation.

Witnesses to the alleged stabbing said they were horrified that something so serious could happen at such a public place.

Mr Kidd will face court again in December.
