Munno Para stabbing: 18yo alleged stabber was bullied by alleged victim

The teen accused of stabbing another young man in broad daylight, and spraying his girlfriend with capsicum spray, was allegedly abused by the victim “for years”, a court has heard.

A teen, targeted because of his intellectual disabilities, allegedly snapped after years of abuse at the hands of the young man he is accused of repeatedly stabbing.

The 18-year-old police allege carried out a brutal stabbing at Munno Para shops on Friday at lunchtime was also, the court heard, being followed by the 19-year-old he stabbed.

The revelations came as Jasper Kidd, 18, of Evanston Park, appeared in the Elizabeth Magistrates Court charged with assault and causing harm with intent over the alleged attack.

The man he allegedly repeatedly stabbed, Kye Furner, was rushed to the Royal Adelaide Hospital after bystanders, then paramedics, rushed to his aid at the shopping centre.

The court on Monday heard Mr Kidd was at the shops with his girlfriend when Mr Furner and his girlfriend approached them.

But for the last several years, the court heard, Mr Kidd was allegedly the victim of Mr Furner and his friends who targeted him because of his vulnerability – severe intellectual disabilities and an IQ of 71.

Rebecca Andreason, duty solicitor for Mr Kidd, told the court his family had installed a $20,000 security system to track that targeting as it evolved into something more serious.

She told the court Mr Kidd and his family had been subject to “traumatic experiences” from Mr Furner and his friends including being physically assaulted, having their home’s front door kicked in, and their home being broken into.

“ (Mr Kidd) has been abused for years for no reason other than that he is young and vulnerable,” Ms Andreason said.

“Ultimately, Your Honour, he just does want to be left alone.”

Two more 19-year-olds, young women from Craigmore and Munno Para were also charged with aggravated affray over the brawl and will face court in March.

Witnesses on Friday reacted to the alleged stabbing and said they were horrified something so serious could happen at such a public place.

A prosecutor on Monday told the court Mr Kidd, before he allegedly stabbing Mr Furner, sprayed the girlfriend in the face with what police believe was pepper spray.

He said a fight subsequently broke out and Mr Furner was “winning” before the bloody horror unfolded.

Magistrate Mark Semmens said, despite the backstory which led up to the alleged stabbing, what Mr Kidd was charged over was of “great concern” to the community.

“(He’s) armed in a public place, gets in a fight, then uses a knife … stabs him four times, in public, in broad daylight, on CCTV,” he said.

“ … however, (Ms Andreason’s) submission paints a very different picture of the situation from the allegations.”

Mr Semmens released Mr Kidd on bail in anticipation of him being transferred to home detention later in the week.
