Tea Tree Gully Mayor Kevin Knight says losing 250 car parks is a worthy trade for an improved Tea Tree Plaza.

PARKING spaces at Tea Tree Plaza will be cut by 250 to make way for the first stage of a $235m development.

Scentre Group, which owns the Plaza, last week confirmed the loss of parking as part of its plans to build a new entertainment and leisure precinct.

Mayor Kevin Knight said he could only assume the State Government’s Development Assessment Commission had carefully considered the loss of parking before approving the project earlier this year.

“I am sure Tea Tree Plaza centre management would not be doing it if they thought it was going to have a large impact on their clients,” he said.

“If the development enhances the interface between the shopping centre and North East Road, it will be worth trading off a few carparks.”

The State Government has budgeted to build an extra 300 parking spaces at the Modbury Park ‘n’ Ride interchange.

Timelines for both projects are unknown.
