AS a teenager, Jules Sebastian worked long hours at McDonalds in Modbury – and then took her pay packet next-door to Tea Tree Plaza to “blow it all” on clothes.
Back then the celebrity stylist and TV star – who grew up in Hope Valley and met her husband, singer Guy Sebastian, at church in Paradise – was a fashion-conscious teen “obsessed” with the Plaza.
“Tea Tree Plaza will always hold a special place in my heart,” laughs Jules, 37.
“I totally got my sense of style from shopping at the Plaza. I’d get my money from Maccas and I’d spend it all on clothes at the Plaza. They were dangerously close to each other.”
Jules, who now lives in Sydney with Guy and their boys Hudson, 5, and Archer, 3, has fond memories of her carefree childhood.
Her parents lived in a cul-de-sac in Hope Valley and she would “run, climb trees, go in the creek”.
“I don’t think that’s how my kids are going to grow up,” says Jules, who got her first bee sting rolling down a hill at Civic Park.
“Their life is so much busier, fast-paced with a lot of activities.”
Jules says the “beauty” of her marriage to Guy, who she started dating when she was 20, was that they shared memories of growing up in the northeast. “We have so much history and know exactly where we came from, how we grew up,” says Jules, who studied at Pedare Christian College and Torrens Valley Christian School.
“We’re very grateful for growing up where we did.” Jules, who moved to Sydney to be with Australian Idol winner Guy in 2006, is now a celebrated stylist and TV personality with more than 100,000 Instagram followers.
Her popular online series Tea With Jules has featured Gold Logie winner Kate Ritchie, Eurovision superstar Conchita Wurst and even her husband. The couple also run their own charity, the Sebastian Foundation, for women and children in crisis.
“I think growing up where we did 100 per cent helps us to stay grounded. It’s so friendly and warm, that’s what I like about it.”
