A northern suburbs CFS volunteer left the young girl he groomed and sexually abused over several years hating all men.
Gary Omond’s deviant actions left a once bright and bubbly young girl losing joy in the sport she loved and her life changed forever.
A victim impact statement from the victim and her mother were read to the Adelaide District Court on Friday.
The victim’s mother said Omond had taken it upon himself to groom her daughter.
“When she finally came and told me what he had done to her, my heart was ripped out of my chest,” she said.
“I just want my bright and bubbly little girl back but I know this will take time.”
The victim said Omond’s vile offending was a “nightmare” and changed her life forever.
The victim said she was now failing classes because she could not concentrate and had lost interest in some of her passions, including netball.
“I hate all men, they are terrible and I do not feel safe around any man without my mum,” she said.
“I feel I will never be the same again.”
Omond, 36, of Craigmore, was found guilty by Justice Adam Kimber in May of maintaining an unlawful sexual relationship with a child.
The court heard the victim was aged under 12 years at the time of the offending.
Patrick Mulvihill, for the prosecution, told the court Omond demonstrated no insight into his offending.
Kathryn Waite, for Omond, told the court he still didn’t admit the offending but accepted the verdict.
“Mr Omond does feel remorse and he accepts that his conduct with the victim has had consequences to her life,” she said.
The court heard Omond’s partner remained supportive of him and they had a 15-month child together.
“He’s not able to see his children,” Ms Waite said.
Ms Waite said Omond would engage in sexual offenders courses because he needed to demonstrate rehabilitation to be allowed contact with his daughter upon release.
Justice Kimber revoked Omond’s bail due to his “inevitable” jail term and will sentence him next month.
