Emmanuel Samuel was jailed in the Adelaide District Court for the vicious assault on his ex-girlfriend in Hindley St

The ‘monster’ who choked and bashed his ex-partner on Hindley St - leaving her bloodied and bruised - over a Snapchat account may soon walk free.

‘No-brainer’ to make domestic violence leave a right

The man that choked and bashed his ex-partner – leaving her fearing for her life – because she had accessed his Snapchat account wants to rehabilitate from his alcohol issues.

Emmanuel Kanga Samuel, 20, is eligible to apply for parole for the vicious public attack.

The Adelaide District Court on Tuesday heard Samuel ran into his ex-partner on a night out in Hindley St on January 10.

“The offender started to yell at her for using his Snapchat account on her phone,” Judge Paul Cuthbertson said during sentencing.

Samuel followed the victim to an elevator in a carpark.

“He pushed her against the wall … he grabbed her by the hair and pulled her back against the wall,” Judge Cuthbertson said.

The victim tried to run away but Samuel chased her.

“The offender punched the complainant multiple times to the left side of her face, each time he punched her the back of her head hit the wall,” Judge Cuthbertson said.

“He put both hands around her throat and squeezed.”

The court heard Samuel then filmed the victim crying while verbally abusing her.

The victim lost chunks of hair, suffered a bloody nose and bruising around her neck.

Samuel, of Munno Para West, had previously pleaded guilty to assault and choking.

He has been in custody since his arrest.

A victim impact statement was previously read to the court, with his ex saying it seemed like Samuel was possessed during the assault.

“I honestly thought that was going to be my last night, I believed my life was going to be taken by him,” the victim said.

“I don’t understand why they (Samuel’s friends) don’t see him as a monster, he used to brag to them about hitting me.”

The court heard Samuel had met the victim at school and they had been in an on-and-off “toxic” relationship for two years.

Samuel, who is from Uganda, had previously been working in the labouring industry.

“He has significant problems with alcohol and describes himself as a functioning alcoholic,” Judge Cuthbertson said.

The court heard Samuel had written a letter of apology, saying he is remorseful for his actions and that he wants to rehabilitate.

Judge Cuthbertson sentenced Samuel to 15 months jail, with a non-parole period of 10 months.

“Females who are in a domestic relationship or have recently left one are entitled to feel safe, both in their home and in public areas,” he said.

“They are entitled to go out and enjoy themselves.”

The sentence was backdated to January 10, meaning Samuel is now eligible to apply for parole.
