Emmanuel Samuel to be sentenced next month for vicious assault on ex-girlfriend in Hindley St

A woman feared she was going to die when she was choked, lost chunks of hair, and suffered a bloody nose in a terrifying Hindley St attack, over accessing her ex’s Snapchat.

‘No-brainer’ to make domestic violence leave a right

A man who choked his ex-partner, then filmed her crying is “mortified” by his behaviour.

Emmanuel Kanga Samuel, 20, executed the public attack because he was angry she was still accessing his Snapchat account.

The court heard Samuel ran into his ex-partner on a night out in Hindley St on January 10, leading to the assault.

“It consisted of a prolonged attack, during which he grabbed the complainant by the throat,” a prosecutor told the Adelaide District Court on Wednesday.

“The complainant was unable to breathe throughout the incident, the defendant would not let the complainant escape.

“The defendant wasn’t deterred by being in public, nor by members of the public who tried to intervene.”

The court heard Samuel then filmed the victim crying while verbally abusing her.

The victim lost chunks of hair, suffered a bloody nose and bruising around her neck.

Samuel, of Munno Para West, had previously pleaded guilty to assault and choking.

He has been in custody since his arrest.

A victim impact statement was read out to the court.

“I cannot even begin to describe the feelings of terror I felt when I was attacked by him,” the victim said.

“It’s like he was possessed … I had bruises from my face down to my legs.

“I honestly thought that was going to be my last night, I believed my life was going to be taken by him.

“I don’t understand why they (Samuel’s friends) don’t see him as a monster, he used to brag to them about hitting me.”

Aaron Almeida, for Samuel, told the court he had met the victim at school and they had been in an on-and-off “toxic” relationship for two years.

The court heard Samuel had been angry the night of the assault because the victim still had access to his Snapchat account, despite their relationship having ended two weeks prior.

“The whole incident escalated out of hand, through Mr Samuel’s fault,” Mr Almeida said.

“He has acted with alcohol under his belt, completely inappropriately, disgustingly.

“Mr Samuel accepts full responsibility.”

The court heard Samuel, who is from Uganda, had previously been working in the labouring industry.

“He is mortified by his actions and the impact it’s had on [the victim],” Mr Almeida said.

The court heard Samuel had never been in custody before and had undertaken a drug and alcohol course.

Mr Almeida pushed for the jail term to be suspended.

Judge Paul Cuthbertson will sentence Samuel next month.
