Sex predator's bizarre police interview after straddling sleeping grandma

A sex predator who broke into a grandmother’s house stark naked told police he wouldn’t have been in trouble with someone younger because he has “a way with people his age”.

Anthony Michael Doyle, 26, was found guilty by a jury in July to assault with intent to rape and serious criminal trespass, after he broke into the 68-year-old woman’s Elizabeth East house and sexually assaulted her.

The District Court on Wednesday heard Doyle was on the prowl for a young woman to have “consensual sex” with when he broke into the stranger’s house on September 14, 2020.

“Rather than knock on the door, you decided to enter the house uninvited,” Judge Jane Schammer said during sentencing.

“You climbed up a balcony and entered through an unlocked sliding door … before entering you stripped completely naked.”

The court heard Doyle entered a bedroom on the ground floor, where the victim was asleep.

“You straddled her with your erect penis positioned near her face,” Judge Schammer said.

The court heard the victim woke up to find Doyle on top of her and yelled out to her husband.

Doyle then said to the victim “I was looking for someone younger. Don’t you want me?”

The victim’s husband managed to restrain Doyle until police arrived.

During his police interview, Doyle can be heard telling police he wasn’t expecting an older woman to be there.

“If it was someone more my age I have a feeling I wouldn’t be in this situation,” he said.

“I have a way with people my age.”

In the victim impact statements read last month, the court heard the couple sold their family home a month after the attack, where they had brought up their children and enjoyed visits from their grandchildren.

“Hopefully you will learn that if you are ever to enter society again you will need to treat women with respect and dignity and not just someone to meet your sexual urges,” the victim said to Doyle.

The court heard Doyle told a psychologist he saw a pornography video of someone going into a random house and having consensual sex with a sleeping person.

“It is likely at the time of the offending you were acting out a fantasy based on a similar scenario,” Judge Schammer said.

The court heard Doyle, who previously worked for OTR, smoked marijuana before the incident.

Judge Schammer said Doyle had shown no remorse or insight into his offending and sentenced him to six years jail, with a non-parole period of three years and six months.

“It cannot be underestimated how frightening this must have been for (the victim) to be woken by a naked intruder on top of her in her bed,” she said.

The sentence was backdated to September 14, 2020.
