Charlotte Germaine shares her incredible story of hope after the shocking loss of her vision

She was just a teenager when she lost her vision. Now, thanks to the support of guide dogs Henry and Zeke, Charlotte Germaine is embracing life to the full.

A young woman who lost 95 per cent of her vision at the age of 18 has shared her story in an effort to raise funds for the Royal Society for the Blind.

Charlotte Germaine, now 27, lost her sight in 2013 due to a condition called Toxoplasmosis, forcing her to hand in her learner’s permit after only hitting the roads for three months.

Since then she’s had two guide dogs from the Royal Society for the Blind by her side.

“When I became blind I felt like a prisoner, but my guide dog set me free,” Ms Germaine said.

“Henry and Zeke have changed my life.

“Without them, I honestly don’t know what my life would look like.

“I could suddenly go shopping independently.

“I was able to go to the football – even though I couldn’t see a thing the atmosphere was brilliant.

“I took my first ever plane ride to Sydney and so much more.”

Ms Germaine has been fundraising since 2014 and her next goal is to raise $50,000, which is how much it costs to raise and train a guide dog.

“I want to give back to the organisation that changed my life,” she said.

“I hope someone’s life will be changed like mine.”

Ms Germaine’s latest fundraiser is a Mother’s Day Luncheon at the Highbury Hotel Function Rooms on May 1, with part proceeds going to the RSB.

A three-course meal and guest speakers will share their stories.

“It doesn’t have to be mothers and daughters,” Ms Germaine said.

“Anyone who wants to come and learn about the dogs is so welcome.”
