Chad Dean Barry jailed for seven years for horrific rape and assaults

A man who violently bashed a vulnerable woman in front of his daughter before raping her in a horrific attack has been locked up for several years.

What happens after a sexual assault?

A rapist threatened to kill a vulnerable woman before sexually assaulting her in a “terrorising” course of conduct.

Chad Dean Barry, 40, was jailed for several years after his victim managed to escape from the sickening attack and seek help.

During sentencing, the District Court heard Barry was constantly “abusive, mean and violent” towards the victim.

The court heard Barry was in the car with his daughter and the victim in 2019.

“On your journey you called the victim a lazy b**** before then striking her with a closed fist to the mouth,” Judge Anthony Allen said.

“You loosened three of the victim’s teeth and she was bleeding profusely from her mouth.”

An argument ensued between Barry and the victim later in 2019.

“The victim attempted to escape, and you grabbed her and dragged her back into the house,” Judge Allen said.

The court heard the victim tried to lock herself in the bathroom, but Barry attacked her, including throwing a hot cup of tea at her.

Later that night, the victim ran from the house but Barry chased her, and forced her into the car.

“You stated ‘you are not going to get away from me this easy. I’m going to kill you’,” Judge Allen said.

The court heard Barry then forced the victim to perform fellatio on him.

He raped the victim later the same night.

The court heard Barry and the victim got back into the car, where she managed to escape at a service station and told the attendant to call the police and ambulance.

“The victim did not want to leave the service station because she was scared that you would kill her,” Judge Allen said.

Barry, of Craigmore, pleaded guilty to causing harm with intent, assault and rape.

The court heard Barry’s offending had a significant impact on the victim, who now lives with fear and embarrassment.

Judge Allen said Barry’s family were hardworking, law abiding people, who maintained their support of him.

“It must break their hearts to see what has become of your life,” he said.

The court heard Barry commenced using drugs, including meth from a young age to “numb the pain” of his traumatic childhood.

Judge Allen sentenced Barry to seven years and eight months jail, with a non-parole period of six years and one month.

“This is serious offending committed against a vulnerable woman as part of a terrorising course of conduct,” he said.

The sentence was backdated to August 29, 2019 when Barry was taken into custody.
