Chad Christou denied bail in the Adelaide Magistrates Court, charged with drug trafficking alongside partner Sanja Parenta

A man was allegedly busted with drugs in his underpants when police raided a couple’s drug operation in a Walkerville hotel room, a court has heard.

A couple allegedly turned to drug dealing from a hotel room after police searched their house and found a significant amount of drugs, as well as a loaded gun, a court has heard.

Chad Peter Christou, 35, applied for bail in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Thursday after he was allegedly caught with drugs hidden in his underpants during arrest.

His partner and co-accused, Sanja Parenta, 38, is on home detention bail for the commercial drug trafficking charges.

A police prosecutor opposed the bail application, saying the allegations were serious and the evidence was strong.

The court heard six firearms locked in a safe, as well as a kilogram of gunpowder and ammunition was stolen from a property on October 9.

Police attended Christou and Parenta’s Greenwith house on October 13 on the belief they were involved with the stolen guns.

“They located the firearms safe,” the police prosecutor said.

“Inside draws is a loaded rifle that has a homemade silencer, three gel blasters and ammunition.”

Police also allegedly found three bottles of GBH – also known as fantasy – under the rifle, which was estimated at 2-3L.

“Inside the house, there is 5g of methamphetamine located in the master bedroom and multiple tick lists,” the police prosecutor said.

The court heard police re-attended the following day and neither of the co-accused were present again.

The police prosecutor said Christou used his credit card at the Walkers Arm Hotel on October 16 leading police to attend and search their hotel room two days later.

“Upon searching that room, 5-6L of suspected fantasy is located,” the police prosecutor said.

“There was a trafficable of methamphetamine, scales, four separate phones and tick lists.”

“There are numerous notes where it appears that Ms Parenta has set up multiple fake identities and started all different types of accounts of people with these ID’s,” the police prosecutor said.

Parenta and Christou were arrested.

“Mr Christou on arrest has in his underpants three bags of methamphetamine, 14 Suboxone strips and a bag with 15 pills inside,” the police prosecutor said.

The court heard police found some of the stolen firearms wrapped in garbage bags in Gawler scrubland on November 2.

Christou and Parenta, both of Greenwith, are charged with trafficking in a commercial quantity of drugs and dishonestly receiving property without consent.

They are yet to enter any pleas.

Stacey Carter, for Christou, told the court it was “extraordinary” how long the prosecution was taking to provide her with evidence.

“Peoples’ liberty is deprived while they sit in custody with no evidence, no disclosure – it is entirely unfair,” she said,

Ms Carter told the court Christou had limited criminal history in the past few years.

“That shows he has been living primarily a law abiding life,” she said.

Chief Magistrate Mary-Louise Hribal denied Christou bail.

“I’m concerned about the fact that this is very serious offending and the risk of reoffending,” she said.

The charges were adjourned until July.
