A prominent vacant block in Klemzig will be turned into a car hire business.
The site, at 352-354 North East Rd, was earmarked for a bulky goods development, however, it will now become a car hire outlet with wash bay and carparking.
A 6m-tall illuminated freestanding sign will also be built.
Port Adelaide Enfield’s planning panel approved the development at its last meeting.
The bulky goods development was approved in 2019, along with an X Convenience service station, which has since been built and is operating.
The western half of a building already on the site will be demolished to make way for the wash bay, where cars will be cleaned by hand.
The remainder of the building will be upgraded, and a 3m-tall acoustic fence built along the site’s southern boundary.
The business will operate from Monday to Friday, 7.30am to 5.30pm, Saturday, 7.30am to 4pm, and Sunday, 8am to 2pm.
A council report said concerns raised about the development included increased traffic creating safety and parking issues on Trent Avenue, noise from the wash bay and its opening hours.
However, the report said the “size, scale and appearance” of the development was consistent with the commercial development found within the area.

“On a review of the locality, the amenity is already impacted upon due to the high volumes of traffic, close proximity of commercial land uses and lack of notable vegetation along North East Rd,” it said.
“Furthermore, given that there is no real consistent character within the locality, the appearance of the proposed development is not considered to unduly impact the built form of the locality, in particular as its fronts onto an arterial road.”
