A man caring for his elderly parents in his house was also running a commercial drug-dealing business from the garage, police allege.

Canh Huynh Ly, 42, applied for home detention bail in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Monday, after he was allegedly found with a significant amount of drugs and a gun “to protect his stash”.

The court heard Mr Ly answered the door when police attended to search his Parafield Gardens residence on May 7.

They allegedly found a plastic resealable bag containing 8.6g methamphetamine and more than $1200 in Mr Ly’s pockets.

During a search of Mr Ly’s garage police allegedly found a large amount of drugs in various locations.

“Police seized and allege that the accused was in possession of a total of 1.1kg of methamphetamine, 918g of heroin (and) small amounts of cannabis,” the prosecutor said.

Police also found a revolver, $64,110 and a number of mobile phones.

“Police will assert that the weapon is in the accused’s possession for the purposes of protecting his stash,” the prosecutor said.

Mr Ly, of Parafield Gardens, is charged with commercial drug trafficking, money laundering and possessing a firearm.

Michael Woods, for Mr Ly, told the court they accepted the offending was serious.

The court heard Mr Ly was living with his 92-year-old father and 83-year-old mother, for whom he provides daily care.

“There were no drugs found in the house where he lives,” Mr Woods said. “The police didn’t come for him, the police came for someone else.

“Was he clever enough or smart enough to take it (the methamphetamine) out of his top pocket? No.”

Mr Woods said the revolver found during the search wasn’t as serious as it initially seemed in the allegations.

“It’s a BB gun – something you buy from Bali for $4.50 and he says it had been in his shed for years,” he said.

Mr Woods said Mr Ly had limited criminal history and worked on a farming property as supervisor.

“He has parents of ill health, he’s got ties to the state … he’s got a mortgage,” he said.

Mr Woods said Mr Ly could also offer $5000 cash surety.

Magistrate Briony Kennewell refused Mr Ly bail.

The charges were adjourned until November.
