A young thug said he doesn't want to go back to jail after he sought retribution for threats made against his sick father.

Caleb Levi Galffy, 22, was given a chance to turn his life around after he was sentenced for violent threats while in a heightened state of emotion.

Caroline Tassone, for Galffy, said the catalyst for the offending was when his father was in hospital with a blood infection and in an induced coma.

“The complainant’s son had made threats to go to the hospital where his dad was in a coma," she said.

“The threats were serious. He says that he had threatened to kill him.”

Ms Tassone said Galffy went with a group to the victim's property in October 2021 to confront him.

The court heard a member of Galffy's group was holding what appeared to be a firearm at the time.

“When the complainant was not present, our client recklessly and in frustration, in a heightened state of emotion, made threats against the complainant’s father," Ms Tassone said.

Ms Tassone said Galffy was reckless as to whether the victim would take the threats seriously or fear for his safety.

Galffy, of Paralowie, pleaded guilty to threatening life.

Ms Tassone said Galffy was remorseful for his offending and acknowledged his actions were irresponsible.

The court heard Galffy's grandfather was a wheelchair bound, double amputee and he had been assisting his grandma with his daily care needs before being taken into custody.

The court heard Galffy, who was expelled from both primary school and high school, started using cannabis at 10, which escalated to daily use.

Ms Tassone said Galffy was then introduced to methamphetamine by two older friends at the age of 12.

“At the age of 16, he instructs he had a full-blown daily habit,” she said.

Ms Tassone said because Galffy had been in and out of custody he had only met his four-year-old daughter a few times.

“He has reflected on that and he is very keen to build a relationship with the daughter to be a part of her life,” she said.

Galffy was jailed in 2021 after he told officers during an arrest that he had swallowed an object so he could be taken to hospital, before running from the waiting room.

A police officer required stitches after injuring herself on an iron fence during Galffy's escape from custody - which he pleaded guilty to.

However, Galffy’s escape was short-lived and he was recaptured.

Ms Tassone said Mr Galffy would have potential work available to him as a painter when released.

Judge Rauf Soulio said Galffy’s criminal history wasn’t promising and asked him what had changed.

Galffy said it was the longest time he had spent in jail and didn't want to go back - having completed a drug rehabilitation program while in custody.

After taking into account time Galffy had spent in custody, Judge Soulio sentenced him to five months jail.

The sentence was suspended on a $1000, 18-month good behaviour bond.
