Bikie Chad McGregor who avoided jail for shocking DV abuse imprisoned for repeated breaches of home detention sentence

A meth-addicted bikie who was spared jail after he bashed his partner is now behind bars after he repeatedly breached his strict home detention conditions.

Who’s who in the bikie underworld?

A former Hells Angels bikie who abused his partner and knocked her unconscious has finally been jailed after he repeatedly breached his home detention sentence.

Chad Alexander McGregor, 31, was sentenced to two years, eight months and 29 days in prison with a non-parole period of one year, three months and 29 days for the “cruel” bashing of his former partner.

Between 2018 and 2019 the victim was choked and had her head slammed into the floor twice knocking her unconscious, a court has heard.

The court heard on one occasion the victim attempted to flee through a bathroom window, in nothing but a T-shirt and underpants.

After reaching her car — McGregor caught up with her and forced her head between the steering wheel and the driver-side door, she was then dragged from the car by her hair.

McGregor, of North Adelaide, pleaded guilty to two counts of assault, two counts of aggravated assault and one count of aggravated assault against the female victim in June 2022.

In June last year McGregor’s lawyer, Nick Vadasz, successfully petitioned the District Court for a sentence that would allow his client to remain in the community.

Mr Vadasz cited both the time since the offending and McGregor’s progress in overcoming chronic methamphetamine addiction.

Three months on in September, an affidavit from the corrections department released to The Advertiser alleged McGregor had breached his home detention conditions several times.

The court heard that McGregor returned a positive drug test for amphetamines and methamphetamine on July 7, August 9 and August 26, 2022.

Between June and September, McGregor failed to ensure his home detention ankle monitor was charged sufficiently on four separate occasions.

In September 2022, McGregor was supposed to begin a specialist family violence course as part of his home detention sentence.

The corrections report alleges that he arrived several hours late on the first day and then did not attend at all after that.

On Wednesday, April 26, Judge Geraldine Davison revoked McGregor’s home detention and dismissed arguments that McGregor’s failure to comply with his strict conditions had anything to do with his current partner.

“A submission was made by Mr Vadasz that the department had frustrated your ability to comply with the home detention order by not permitting your partner to be present at meetings,” she said.

“I do not accept this submission — you were the person who was on home detention, not your partner.

“It is for you to comply and it is for you to organise yourself. If your organisational skills are so poor that you are unable to do this, then it may well be that you are not an appropriate candidate for home detention.”

Judge Davison reduced his head sentence and non-parole period by 254 days for time spent on home detention.

McGregor’s head sentence was revised to two years and 20 days with a non-parole period of six months and 20 days.
