A NEW $1 million playground complete with a flying fox and tree houses has opened at Cobbler Creek Recreation Park — the latest in a string of new play spaces for young South Australians.

The “kites and kestrels” themed playground features tyre swings, slides and bike tracks.

There are also barbecues, picnic shelters and toilets.

The playground was designed using information from residents who requested specific features during public consultation earlier this year.

It was designed by Malvern’s Birdseye Studios and built by Largs Bay’s LCS Landscapes.

Gulfview Heights girl Kahlee Krombholz tested out the park last week and loved it.

“I like the swings and the cubby houses, and the slide,” Kahlee, 5, said.

The playground in the 266-hectare protected Cobbler Creek Recreation Park north of Adelaide is the latest in a series of new play areas in South Australia.

Earlier this month a nature playground was opened in the heart of Noarlunga Centre, south of the city.

The Great Garden at Ramsay Place has slides, jungle ropes, water features and musical instruments and the plan is to extend it further as part of a $1.3m vision to breathe new life into the space between Onkaparinga Council’s offices, Colonnades Shopping Centre, Hopgood Theatre and Noarlunga TAFE.

And early this year a sweeping new seaside playground was opened at Glenelg, on the former site of Scampi’s Restaurant.

The $1.3 million play space on the foreshore — between the town hall and the jetty — includes an extra-wide slippery dip, in-ground trampolines, a hammock swing, a sandpit, a climbing dome, a cubby, a tunnel and rope activities.

There is also a water play area for children with limited mobility.

Last year more than $3.5 million was spent upgrading the sprawling St Kilda Adventure Playground, also in Adelaide’s north.

That revamp included a new bouncy boomerang feature, slippery slides on the volcano and castle structures, a basketball court, electric barbecues, shade areas and swings.

And in Modbury’s Civic Park 20-year-old playground has undergone a $768,000 overhaul to include new play zones, a climbing frame and rope swing.
