The teenager charged over a crash that left his 17-year-old friend dead refused for hours to tell police who was driving the car, a court has heard.

The 16-year-old Craigmore boy, who cannot be named because of his age, on Wednesday did not apply for bail in the Elizabeth Magistrates Court.

The court heard the teen, when police ascertained it was him who was allegedly driving, was doing so on a disqualified licence.

He was charged with aggravated causing death and serious injury by dangerous driving, leaving the scene of a serious crash and other traffic offences including driving disqualified.

The teenager, if found guilty, faces as long as 15 years behind bars.

Police said the crash occurred at the Edinburgh RAAF military facility after the car was initially spotted by police on Petherton Road at Andrews Farm.

They said they did not pursue the car and lost sight of it, though court documents showed the aggravating feature of the teen’s charges was that he was “attempting to escape a police pursuit”.

Police alleged 17-year-old Atem Kuany, of Craigmore, was found lying on the ground next to the wreckage of the Holden Commodore he and his three friends were travelling in.

Police said they initially identified the car as defected, but the driver failed to stop.

The two other passengers, a 21-year- old man from Melton in Victoria and an 18-year-old woman from Elizabeth South, were both taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Magistrate Mark Semmens remanded the teen to appear again in court next month.
