It’s no secret that South Australians love their sweets.

From frog cakes to sneaking some of mum’s hidden FruChocs in the fridge, South Australians are blessed with a wide range of yummies that satisfy any craving.

The same can be said for Prospect’s Muratti Cakes & Gateaux.

The staple for the local community since opening in 1990, Muratti Cakes & Gateaux has been voted the state’s best cake maker.

Specialising in gateaux - a rich cake often containing layers of cream or fruit - the business also serves a range of delightful macarons, croquembouche, quiches and pastries.

Co-owner Jimmy Parris said consistency was the key to success.

“We’re very steady and very busy, we’re seeing a lot of functions come back and a lot of people come back to do dine-ins,” Mr Parris said.

“A lot of effort goes in day to day from all the people involved in the business.

“You want to hear the feedback, whether it’s positive or crushing, we take everything on board and learn from it and you ride the emotion of that.”

Mr Parris has been working at Muratti Cakes & Gateaux since he was a teenager.

Despite a new era dawning upon the business, Mr Parris ensures the love of sweet desserts and other delights remain at the front of everything they do.

“Depending on the time of year and what is trending in that moment, it’s often reflected in the cakes,” he said.

“Our gateaux always sell really well - the classic hazelnut, chocolate, mixed berry - and our pistachio gateaux has also been really popular.

“We’re always trying to introduce new products and keep up with any trends that there are.

“If customers buy a product, love it, and then go to buy it again and it’s different, (the business) loses that sense of trust.

“But we have so many people that have been coming to us for 20 or 30 years and they have been the backbone of the business.”
