South East man accused of intentionally lighting a haystack on fire in Hynam has been granted bail
A firebug who allegedly intentionally started a bushfire in the south east over the March Long Weekend has been granted bail.

An 18-year-old man accused of starting a bushfire has been granted bail after appearing in the Mount Gambier Magistrates Court today.
The 18-year-old from the South East, who legally cannot be named, is facing charges of intentionally causing a bushfire and damaging property after allegedly lighting a haystack on fire at Hynam, near Naracoorte, in the Lower-South-East, causing a bushfire to break out on Saturday March 9.
Country Fire Service crews received reports of the fire on Cromper Road between Hynam and Mount Light at around 6:45pm.
Responding crews, supported by local Farm Fire Units, attended the scene, working into the night to extinguish the fire with the help of five fire trucks and one bulk water carrier.
According to the Naracoorte CFS Brigade’s Facebook page, incident crews were able to contain the fire to the area of the stack but were required to stay into the evening and carry out back burning to keep it under control.
The same day, an 18-year-old man was arrested in relation to fire and appeared before the Mount Gambier Magistrates Court on Tuesday March 12.
A week later, on March 19, he was granted bail and remanded to appear next in Mount Gambier on January 20, 2025.
