A drug and alcohol rehab centre would be introduced in an SA town once labelled the ice capital of Australia, under a proposal to offer medical and mental health expertise to clients undergoing detox.
Documents submitted to Plan SA reveal a property in Suttontown, just north of Mount Gambier, would be converted into the ‘Falcon Detox Centre’ – a rehab facility developed by NDIS providers Serene Country Living.
The centre would accommodate up to four clients at any one time for a period of three-to-ten days, and would operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
“Clients will reside at the centre during the detox program which typically takes between three-to-ten days,” the plans say.
“The centre operates as a voluntary admission centre, where clients choose to attend at their own will to seek support as a part of their detox program.
“The centre is operate under a range of experienced staff including medical staff, counselling staff and support staff.”
Medical staff, including a registered nurse or licenced practical nurse, would be employed at the centre – as well as on-call physicians and psychiatrists.
A courtyard, kitchen, library, dining room and five bedrooms are all situated at the property.
Submissions are open until March 14.
Mount Gambier has long contested its ‘meth capital’ tag, which was first aired more than 10 years ago on a TV current affairs show.
Police in the town have called that “crap”, with the SE Voice quoting Superintendent Campbell Hill in 2021 as saying people had “misunderstood” that claim.
