Naracoorte man accused of involvement in alleged five-man gang rape bailed despite fears he could ‘abscond’

The names of five men accused the alleged gang rape of an 18-year-old girl from Adelaide’s west – which a court heard was videoed – can be revealed.

The five men who have been arrested and charged over the alleged gang rape of a teen girl have finally been unmasked after a magistrate lifted a suppression order.

It comes as Ahmed Kadir, 24, from Naracoorte was successful in his bid for home detention bail over the alleged June 18 rape despite objections from police prosecution.

A police prosecutor told the Mount Gambier Magistrate Court on Thursday the alleged victim was an “unwilling participant” who was “pulled off the street”.

“There are four other offenders who are remanded in custody,” a police prosecutor said.

“The risk to the public is great — there’s also a risk of (Mr Kadir) absconding due to the serious nature of the charges.”

Mr Kadir’s lawyer Tess Dunsford was able to convince Magistrate Justin Wickens to grant her client strict home detention bail, under the proviso that he surrender his passport.

“He hasn’t made any attempt to discover and despite knowing that he was under investigation,” a police prosecutor said.

“He was interviewed by the police on the 24th of June and again on the 13th of July before being arrested on the ninth of August.”

Bedhane Bekele, 27, Besufikad Haile, 22, Sadam Hussein Issak, 20, and Mohammed Abdi Abdulahi, 26 have all been charged with engaging in sexual intercourse without consent and are all currently being held on remand.

During a failed bail application the Port Adelaide Magistrate’s Court heard the 18-year-old alleged victim was out clubbing with a friend at Zhivago, before allegedly blacking out and ultimately waking up to men on top of her.

“She doesn’t recall leaving the city … the next thing she remembers is being on a bed in an unknown house with males standing around her,” the police prosecutor said.

The court heard one male allegedly pushed the alleged victim’s head into his penis before slapping her.

“One male asked if she wanted sex and she said no but he did not listen,” the police prosecutor said.

The court heard Mr Haile dropped the victim home before she told her mother what had happened.

The court heard the alleged victim found one of the men on Instagram, messaging him saying she needed the address as she had left belongings at the home.

She then allegedly used the provided address to give to the police.

Police attended the alleged victim’s home and seized clothing from the night with semen match from the alleged victim’s dress matching Mr Haile’s DNA, the court heard.

His phone was seized and police allege a video filmed by the defendant showed him and the other co-accused having sex with the victim.

Mr Kadir who is jointly charged is the only one who has been successful in his bail application.

All five men will front court in September.
