A bloodied Mount Gambier man who allegedly left an old schoolmate in a pool of his own blood with several stab wounds made a desperate call to triple-0, a court has heard.

Mark John Walters, 48, who now lives at Roxby Downs, flagged down police after Gavin Thomas Greene was allegedly stabbed on Mr Walters’ front porch, the court heard.

Speaking for the prosecution a police officer who was first on scene to the January 2, 2021 stabbing, said Mr Walters told officers “I did it — I did it in self defence” as police exited their vehicle.

During his opening address prosecutor Robert Kane said Mr Greene was left in a pool of his own blood with his intestines hanging out after confronting Mr Walters over an alleged $50 drug debt.

Mr Kane also alleged blood was spurting out of Mr Greene’s neck from several stab wounds.

During Mr Kane’s opening, the Mount Gambier District Court heard Mr Greene would float in and out of consciousness as emergency services worked on him only to fully wake several days later in hospital.

In the lead up to the fight Mr Walters had kicked in his own front security screen, Mr Kane alleged.

During the fight Mr Walters became spattered in blood, which covered his forehead and torso and believing the blood belonged to Mr Walters, Mr Greene walked away — telling Mr Walters he should “get checked”, the court heard.

However, after reaching the unit car park, Mr Greene collapsed to the ground and realised he was the one who was bleeding, Mr Kane alleged.

Taking the witness stand Mr Greene told the court roughly 10 days before he was allegedly stabbed, he had threatened that he was going to come around and” kick the s**t out” of Mr Walters if he was not repaid.

Though the pair had been friends since attending Grant High School together the court heard their relationship had broken down over the alleged methamphetamine debt.

Mr Greene said a number of abusive texts over the alleged debt were exchanged between himself and Mr Walters in the days and weeks leading up to the altercation.

In response to repeated text messages Mr Greene said Mr Walters had replied with texts such as “do you need to wash your vagina?” and “don’t forget to take your tampon out”, the court heard.

Mr Greene told the court he lost about a foot of his bowel following surgery after the stabbing and was left with serious scarring and PTSD.

Mr Walters has been charged with one count of aggravated causing serious harm with intent to cause serious harm, which he has pleaded not guilty to.

Nick Vadasz for Mr Walters, previously said the trial would come down to whether his client was acting unlawfully.

Under cross examination Mr Greene admitted he had initially lied to police in his statements about the drug debt fearing he would get in trouble with police over the illicit substance.

The accused, Mr Walters, was arrested at the scene while the alleged victim, Mr Greene, was rushed to Mount Gambier Hospital before being flown to Adelaide.

Mr Walters was also taken to the Mount Gambier Hospital for treatment.

An audio recording of Mr Walters’ triple-0 call was played to the court, as well as police body camera footage, which showed Mr Walters’ spattered in blood.

During the call to emergency services Mr Walters can be heard telling the operator that he “f***** up”.

“I don’t know what I did — I’m sorry,” Mr Walters said.

In the audio played to the court, Mr Walters’ can be heard repeatedly asking if an ambulance was being sent as Mr Greene was “not good” and was “bleeding out”.

Body camera footage captured Mr Walters continuing to inquire about Mr Greene’s condition, while he was under arrest at the Mount Gambier Hospital.

The jury trial continues.
