Leaders of tomorrow: Meet the Limestone Coast’s 2021 school captains

Meet the Limestone Coast’s newest crop of leaders. We’ve asked our 2021 school captains their ambitions and found out what will drive them in their final year.

School is for 2020 but the Limestone Coasts future leaders are already preparing to take the helm next year.

2021 school captains from Mount Gambier, Penola and Millicent are ready to make their mark and create their own legacy.



ST MARTINS LUTHERAN COLLEGE

St Martins Lutheran College will be led by captains Rachael Bird and Harrison Langlands in 2021.

Rachael said the position felt like both a great responsibility and an exciting opportunity.

“I hope to help create better communication and collaboration between students and staff. Through this, I hope to try and make our school a happier and better place for all,” she said.

After high school Rachel hopes to study agricultural science at university.

“To me, a career where I get to do both work inside and outside would be my dream career, therefore I hope to be able to continue studies in ag science to build towards that,” she said.

Harrison was honoured to be selected as school captain and plans to lead by example, determination and grit and listen to others.

“I hope to achieve as much as possible for me to do,” he said.

“It isn’t so much achieving for myself, its implementing what is right for the school in years to come. A higher participation in extra-curricular activities, a better student representative council and a plan for the future are the goals I hope to achieve as school captain.”

Harrison is not in any rush to decide what to do after school but wants to make the most of his Year 12 experience.



PENOLA HIGH SCHOOL

Charlotte Neale and Ella Hutchesson have long hoped to be Penola High School captains.

Together they hope to prepare the school for transition of Year 7 students to high school into 2022.

“I want to involved the sixes and sevens next year so when they do some over they don’t feel as nervous coming into the school and they’ll know some people,” Ella said.

“We’re looking to really involved all students into the school community, get everyone involved, have fun,” Charlotte said.

“Since we have the Year 7s coming out the year after we’re looking to put more seating areas around the school to accommodate for them.”

After high school Charlotte said plans to go to university and undertake a psychology degree and believes leadership experience will help her develop her skills.

“I think its really important to build leadership skills, people skills and public speaking,” she said.

Since she was a reception student Ella has dreamt of becoming a vet and she believes the position will help her one day lead her own practise.




MOUNT GAMBIER HIGH SCHOOL

The Mount Gambier High School 2021 leadership includes captains Josh Kain and Zara Von Stanke and vice-captains Harry Williams and Sarah Dally.

While Josh was honoured to be elected he admitted he was worried about the extra workload but would work hard to ensure the student body had a powerful voice.

“I do hope that I can make school life at Mount Gambier High School at least a little more enjoyable,” he said.

Josh has his sights set on achieving a high ATAR to secure a university place in a medical course with dreams of working as a neurosurgeon or a nuclear physicist.

Fellow captain Zara wants to ensure the school is a place where every student feels safe and heard.

“To be selected as a school captain for 2021 feels a little surreal right now,” she said.

“I’m so grateful that my peers selected me to represent the school along with three other amazing people.”

As school captain, Zara wants to encourage education based on individual student need and once she graduates hopes to study primary school education.

Vice-captain Sarah wants to help students feel supported to reach their highest potential and will pursue a career in the health and wellbeing or business while pushing herself as a cyclist.

Grant High School 2021 leadership team included captains Rachael Kelly and Caitlin Letizia plus vice captains Scout Elshaug and Kellie Wallace.

Rachael aims to represent the school’s student population addressing its concerns and taking action to make sustainable changes at the School.

“I feel very privileged and grateful for the opportunity which the role will provide me to develop my personal leadership and communication skills,” she said.

“Being able to represent student opinion in important conversations and decisions is something I look forward to.”

Rachael is well on the way to becoming a real estate agent having recently begun a traineeship with Key 2 Sale.

“The school captain role is going to assist me in developing for my future through leadership and communication skills while the traineeship will provide experience and contacts in the industry,” she said.



MILLICENT HIGH SCHOOL

In 2021 captain Tess Doecke and vice-captain Ellie Cook will lead Millicent High School.

Tess has been at the school since Year 8 and hopes to work in an industry where she can help people.

With a passion for building others up at this stage she is considering going on to university to study teaching.

Ellie only arrived at Millicent High School, in 2020 as a Year 11 student but has quickly settled in displaying strong leadership skills, citing the strong positive relationships of both staff and students as the reason behind her improved confidence.

She plans to study either criminology or something in the psychology field at university.

Together they hope to further developing relationships across year levels through educational opportunities or extra-curricular activities.
