The South-East town of Millicent is in mourning, after Ned Walker, his wife Nan and their daughter Sue Skeer were killed in a horrific car crash on Saturday.

The three family members – Ned, 80, Nan, 77, and Sue, 55 – were much loved in the town and are being remembered for their contributions to the community, thoroughbred racing industry and the local football league.

Millicent Racing Club president John Payne said the trio were regulars at South-East racing tracks, and would be fondly remembered.

“On behalf of the Millicent Racing Club I would like to express, it is with much regret that we hear the news of the death of one of our life members Ned Walker, his wife Nan and daughter Sue Skeer in such tragic circumstances,” Mr Payne said.

“As a committee we owe a lot of thanks to Ned and Nan for their tireless work that they put towards this racing club and the track over the years and obviously his training feats will be fondly remembered.

“At this sensitive time we will do all we can to support the family and offer to assist them with anything they may need help with.”

The three were killed when their Ford Territory collided head-on with a Toyota Landcruiser on the Princes Highway at Suttontown, on the outskirts of Mount Gambier, at 12.30pm.

Five other people were injured in the crash.

The 16-year-old driver of the landcruiser – an L-Plater – was arrested and charged with caused death by dangerous driving on Sunday morning.

He was bailed to appear in the Mount Gambier Youth Court in February.

The driver of the Ford Territory,, a 48-year-old woman, a 13-year-old boy and 11-year-old girl, were all taken to the local hospital for non-life threatening injuries while a 48-year-old Millicent woman was airlifted to the Flinders Medical Centre where she remains in a serious but stable condition.

The Mid South Eastern Football League has also paid tribute to Mr Walker, who had been carrying on his family’s name at the club.

President Peter Mitchell said the “lovely old fella” would be missed at the annual presentation night where he presented the Walker Medal, named after his father Rex, to the league’s runner-up best and fairest.

“Ned was a character. He was an absolute character,” Mr Mitchell said.

“There’s certainly not many of them are around like that, he called a spade a spade and if he had something to say, he would tell you and tell you to your face and I like that in people.”

The Princes Highway was closed for several hours while Major Crash Investigators attended the scene but has since been reopened.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash who has not yet spoken to police is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or online at crimestopperssa.com.au
