Three people die in crash on Princes Highway at Suttontown, near Mount Gambier

A 16-year-old driver has been charged over a `horrific crash on the Princes Highway at Suttontown, in which three people died and five were injured.

A teenage driver has been charged over a head-on crash on the outskirts of Mount Gambier that claimed the lives of three family members and five other people were injured.

The two vehicles collided at 12.30pm on the Princes Highway at Suttontown on Saturday.

Two women aged 57 and 77 and an 80-year-old man all from Millicent travelling in Ford Territory, died at the scene.

On Sunday morning, the 16-year-old driver of the other car - a Toyota Landcruiser - was arrested and charged with caused death by dangerous driving.

He was bailed to appear in the Mount Gambier Youth Court in February.

Limestone Coast Local Service Area Superintendent Phil Hoff confirmed the three people had lost their lives.

“On the Limestone Coast this year, no lives have been lost on South Australian roads so this is an absolute low to this community,” Superintendent Hoff said.

“As you can see from behind me two cars, absolutely destroyed a road separated by barrier lines, and we’ve got our experts from Adelaide coming here to do a forensic analysis of this scene to determine what happened.

“It does make us scratch our heads a little bit as to try to work out how something like this happened.”

Four occupants in the Toyota Landcruiser, a 16-year-old boy, 48-year-old woman, a 13-year-old boy and 11-year-old girl, were all taken to the local hospital for non-life threatening injuries. They are all believed to be Limestone Coast residents.

The fifth occupant, a 48-year-old Millicent woman was flowen to the Flinders Medical Centre where she is in a serious but stable condition.

Major Crash investigators are at the scene to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash.

The Princes Highway was closed between Kangaroo Flat Road and Sassanowsky Road for several hours.

The lives lost on South Australian roads is at 85, compared with 101 at this time last year.
