Brother of killed mum of three Synamin Bell opens up as one year anniversary passes

The brother of a mother-of-three who was killed in an alleged act of domestic violence has opened up about how the family has struggled as the anniversary of her death passes.

Australia's domestic violence crisis

It’s been one year since Synamin Bell’s life was tragically taken, allegedly claimed in another horrific instance of domestic violence.

Ms Bell was a devoted mother-of-three with aspirations to study medicine to develop a greater knowledge of her children’s health conditions.

Those dreams will never be realised after police allege Ms Bell was murdered at Millicent last year in another alleged case of domestic violence in Australia.

Cody James Edwards, 26, who has been in custody since his March 12 arrest, fronted the Mount Gambier Magistrates Court on Monday.

Though he was expected to enter a plea on Monday, his answer charge date was adjourned for another month.

Mr Edwards has been charged with one count of murder.

Ms Bell’s brother Paul Bell-Inskip, who previously spoke to the Advertiser in the wake of the “unfathomable” tragedy, bravely spoke again about how tough life without Ms Bell had been.

“2022 was a year I was happy to see the back end off, it broke me and I needed a lot of mental strength which I had to find to get through,” he said.

“The anniversary was hard, when you live a busy life and focus on it’s easy to think it’s OK — until it becomes something you actively focus on.”

Mr Bell-Inskip said anniversaries, birthdays and other special dates served as a constant reminder of the family’s loss.

“We all just miss her, she was a bright bubbly person that lived for her kids, she just wanted the best for everyone,” he said.

“(Her kids) are getting through their daily life but desperately missing their mum.

“I feel there is a piece missing from everyone now — it feels like a chunk of bubbly happiness has disappeared.”

Police officers were called to the Poole St home just after 11pm on Saturday responding to reports of an assault on March 12, 2022.

They found Ms Bell’s body inside and arrested Mr Edwards at the scene.

The court previously heard police would be analysing complex forensic evidence including blood spatter, fingerprint and DNA analysis.

A GoFundMe page has been established to help support Ms Bell’s three children aged six, four and three.

Mr Edwards will next front court in April where he is expected to enter a plea.
