Aaron Lloyd and Shane Jarman jailed for robbing homeowner of $10,000

A woman pretended to be the victim of a violent home invasion, when she was secretly teaming up with the men she had convinced to commit the robbery.

Two fathers who robbed a man in a violent home invasion at the suggestion of their female accomplice will be behind bars for a long time.

Aaron Elias Lloyd, 33, and Shane Douglas Jarman, 49, were drug addicted and after easy money when they involved themselves in the enterprise.

The Adelaide District Court last week heard their co-accused, the female “mastermind” of the enterprise, had previously been in a relationship with the victim and was aware he was in possession of large sums of cash.

“She suggested a plan which involved stealing money from his house,” Judge Ian Press said during sentencing.

“The plan also involved a ruse whereby she would be threatened by you to distract attention away from her.”

The woman sent a message to Jarman on June 15, 2018 informing him that $10,000 was in the Gilles Plains house and the front door was unlocked.

Jarman and Lloyd entered through the unlocked front door wearing balaclavas.

Lloyd shoved the victim, causing him to fall to the ground.

“You made your way to the woman and pointed what appeared to be a firearm at her,” Judge Press said.

“You were screaming at her so as to give the appearance that what was happening was a genuine home invasion targeting your co-accused.”

The victim fled the house.

“You, Mr Lloyd, yelled at Mr Jarman to keep the victim there, but the victim threatened you Mr Jarman with a shovel and you allowed him to leave,” Judge Press said.

Lloyd and the co-accused stole the $10,000 from inside the house.

Police tracked the trio to Jarman’s house where they found the money, as well as a photo of Lloyd with a firearm tucked into his waistband with numerous $50 bills.

Jarman, of Paralowie, and Lloyd, of Elizabeth East, had pleaded guilty to serious criminal trespass, assault and theft.

The court heard Jarman went on a downward spiral after he lost his job and his marriage ended.

“It appears that your criminal offending escalated significantly once your life lost direction and your drug use significantly increased,” Judge Ian Press said.

Judge Press said Jarman had a good work history and was motivated to abstain from drugs after realising the effect his criminality had on his daughter.

The court heard Lloyd, who is also a father, had lived most of his life in Mount Gambier.

Judge Press said it was a combination of Lloyd’s drug use and a “desire for easy money” that led him to become involved in the enterprise.

Judge Ian Press sentenced Lloyd to four years and seven months jail, with a non-parole period of two years and 10 months.

The sentence was backdated to June 17, 2020.

After adding on Jarman’s previous sentences, Judge Press sentenced him to eight years and four months jail, with a non-parole period of four years and 11 months.

The sentence was backdated to July 11, 2020.
