Nathan Walker handed a suspended sentence for trafficking cocaine at Brighton

A drug dealer with an “all-consuming addiction” is at risk of being deported back to England after he was caught with a significant amount of cocaine and steroids.

Australia's cocaine crisis

A former personal trainer busted with a significant amount of cocaine and steroids became a prolific drug user after his life spiralled out of control.

Nathan Stephen Walker, 33, risks being deported after being handed a suspended sentence for trafficking cocaine to fuel his “all-consuming addiction”.

Last week, the Adelaide District Court heard police searched Walker’s Brighton house on December 4, 2020.

They found three resealable bags in a shoebox, with a total of 34g of cocaine.

The estimated value was between $9000-$15,000.

Police also found testosterone, steroids, scales and more resealable bags.

Walker admitted that the cocaine was his, although denied selling the drug.

During sentencing, Judge Michael Burnett said he did not accept that the cocaine was all for Walker’s personal use.

Walker, of Brighton, pleaded guilty to drug trafficking and possessing a prescribed drug.

The court heard Walker was born in England and moved to Australia when he was 21.

Walker has previously worked as a personal trainer at a gym and currently works as a truck driver.

“You commenced using cocaine casually when you left high school on occasional weekends,” Judge Burnett said.

The court heard Walker’s cocaine use became an “all-consuming addiction” after the breakdown of his relationship in 2018.

“You also began associating with friends who took drugs, particularly cocaine, and encouraged you to do so,” Judge Burnett said.

“As to the steroids, you were in possession of them because of your interest in gym training and building up your muscles.”

The court heard Walker was no longer taking illicit drugs or associating with the friends who were a negative influence on him.

Judge Burnett said the amount of cocaine found in Walker’s possession was significant.

“Addiction to illicit drugs can cause great damage to an individual and their families,” he said.

“You are a permanent resident of Australia but not an Australian citizen. As such you may face deportation after the conclusion of this matter.”

Judge Burnett sentenced Walker to two years and three months jail, with a non-parole period of 13 months.

It was suspended on a two-year, $500 good behaviour bond, with supervision for 12 months, due to Walker’s remorse and good prospects of rehabilitation.

“You have shown a real desire to change your lifestyle, it is essential that you continue that desire and commitment,” Judge Burnett said.
