Adelaide Hills pizza specialists Lost in a Forest have taken out the title for best pizza in the region.

While the restaurant does side salads to accompany their pizzas and antipasto platters for events, the main focus of the business is the pizza.

The business was set up at Uraidla five years ago.

Co-owner Charlie Lawrence bought the church the restaurant is housed in more than a decade ago.

“The restaurant is in an old stone church, which I bought about 10 years ago,” he said.

“I lived there the first year I owned it, and then rented it out, but I always wanted to do something interesting with it.”

Mr Lawrence said his love of pizza meant specialising in the dish made sense when opening up Lost in a Forest.

“Uraidle was quite the ghost town before we opened up,” he said.

“The pub was shuttered up and closed. It had been closed for four years when we opened up. It turns out, people don’t mind driving up to the Hills for a pizza and in the last few years the town has become very busy.”

Mr Lawrence said Lost in a Forest prides itself on sourcing fresh ingredients, with a particular focus on produce from the Adelaide Hills.

He said there are three pizzas Lost in a Forest is particularly known for including the Banh Mi pizza – with 20 hour slow cooked pork shoulder, flavoured oil, pickled carrots, daikon, coriander and sriracha mayonnaise.

Another two of Lost in a Forest’s most popular pizzas are the ‘Shroom pizza – with three different kinds of mushroom plus confit garlic mushrooms with organic Adelaide Hills blue cheese – and the Buzz Bomb – with local sopressa salami and house-made chilli infused honey.

“One of the judges was from a resort in Macau and we were invited to take over their Michelin-starred restaurant for a week – so it’s amazing where pizza can take you,” Mr Lawrence said.
