A man who thought a group of people were coming to hurt him cut off his home detention bracelet and stole a car to avoid police capture.

Khodr Sam Dib, 28, was jailed in the Adelaide District Court last week after he fell into the wrong crowd and started making poor choices.

The court heard Dib had been at large in April as he had removed his home detention bracelet.

“Police saw you coming back from the beach … you ran from police,” Chief Judge Michael Evans said during sentencing.

Dib entered a Seacliff property through an unlocked sliding door and stole the homeowner’s house and car keys.

A resident was home at the time.

“You drove off in the Subaru,” Chief Judge Evans said.

Dib sped away from police but was arrested later that day.

He had previously pleaded guilty to serious criminal trespass and theft.

The court heard Dib’s life started spiralling after he finished school and his family began breaking apart.

“You started using drugs at about 18 years of age,” Chief Judge Evans said.

“You had trouble fitting in, you fell into the wrong crowd and started to get into trouble with the law.”

The court heard Dib was sentenced to two years jail in 2017 for trafficking methamphetamine.

“On the date that you cut your home detention bracelet off, your mother had seen out of a window a group of people who she thought were coming to hurt you,” Chief Judge Evans said.

“She said she told you to run for your life.”

Chief Judge Evans sentenced Dib to 20 months’ jail, with a non parole period of 10 months.

“People need to be safe and feel safe in their own homes,” he said.

The sentence was backdated to October 1.

Dib was also disqualified from driving for 12 months.
