A meth-addicted truck driver is “embarrassed and ashamed” for sending a child sexually explicit photos and messages.

Michael Douglas Collins, 38, has no recollection of his predatory behaviour towards a teenager 20 years younger than him.

Last week, the Adelaide District Court heard Collins was communicating with the 16-year-old daughter of his friend.

Collins sent the victim a message saying “Hi, I’m horny” followed by a photograph of his penis on January 11, 2020.

He sent further sexualised messages over the period of 18-months.

Collins, of Hillier, had previously pleaded guilty to communicating with the intent of procuring child for sex.

“You have had a long addiction to methamphetamine and indeed your offending occurred against the background of that addiction,” Judge Joanne Tracey said during sentencing.

The court heard Collins’ methamphetamine problem had escalated until it caused the breakdown of his relationship.

“I am told that because of your drug use at the time you have no recollection of sending the messages in question,” Judge Tracey said.

“You say that you are embarrassed and ashamed by your offending, and I understand that you have written a letter of apology to the complainant for your behaviour.”

The court heard Collins, who is a father-of-seven, had been a truck driver for most of his life.

“Recently you were involved in a motor vehicle collision which meant you could not work, but you say you are hopeful of a return,” Judge Tracey said.

The court heard Collins had ceased his drug use and reconciled with his partner.

“It is clear from the complainant's responses to your communications that she had absolutely no interest whatsoever in what you were suggesting to her,” Judge Tracey said.

“Your offending was clearly motivated by sexual self-gratification, and given the complainant's obvious lack of engagement, you continued without any regard to her.”

Judge Tracey sentenced Collins to one year and one month jail, with a non-parole period of six months.
