20 yr old Marnie Clapham has survived a massive stroke

This young physiotherapist started her business from a random room at Goodwood, now she’s claimed the title of South Australia’s best.

From helping athletes return from long-term injuries and tearing up as they return to the field, to “building a community to help a community”, Lauren Bendo embodies what it takes to claim the mantle.

“You do get quite connected to your patients and it’s hard not to feel their pain, especially with long term injuries like ACLs, and their drive to get back can make you emotional,” Ms Bendo said.

It’s not hard to understand why Ms Bendo was nominated by her clients and voted best in the state by the public in our latest poll.

The 27-year-old and her colleague Andrew Hopkins soon developed such a devoted client base they had to open up a whole new studio at Unley called The Physio Society.

And while she now has something to brag about to her business partner, the one-time basketballer who has also worked as a physio with the Thunderbirds, was just glad her commitment to her patients had been effective.

“We want to get the best for our patients, and that’s the biggest drive,” she said.

“My motivating factor has always been seeing patients get better.

“It can eat you down a bit when it’s not working.”

The Physio Society is part of a host of practices moving towards a more modern approach to physio, rehabilitation and health.

Her practice is also home to clinical exercise classes including pilates as well as a podiatrist.

Ms Bendo said her goal was to create a place where the “general population” felt like, and was treated in the same was as, elite athletes.

She said other highlights included working with children and pregnant mums to the point they became an engaged part of their treatment plan.
