The owner of popular barber shop Robbie’s Chop Shop in Hyde Park has taken out the title for SA’s best barber.

From a field of 20 top barbers – and from hundreds of votes – Mr Ferrante has taken the crown by drawing almost 15 per cent of the total vote in the latest Messenger ‘best of’ poll.

Mr Ferrante, 34, has been a barber for 22 years, starting at astonishingly young age of 12, when he followed his grandfather into the business.

“Honestly, this doesn’t even feel like a job to me,” Mr Ferrante said.

“Essentially, I get to come into work, have a laugh and hang out with my mates.

“I just love it. There’s never been a day I haven’t wanted to come into the shop.”

Mr Ferrante’s business just celebrated its sixth birthday.

There are five other barbers working in the shop alongside him, and it is very much a traditional, male-only barber shop.

“It’s a quality experience – but we don’t do washes or colours – just cuts, beard trims and shaves, so it’s very old-school,” he said.

Mr Ferrante said his aim with the business was to create a place where men could hang out and get away from their daily problems.

“It’s a lot like going over to your friend’s house,” he said.

Mr Ferrante said his win came as a very pleasant surprise.

“I didn’t even think I’d come close,” he said.

Tony Primaro from Da Gianni Barbers in North Adelaide came second in the voting for SA’s best with Luke Campagnaro from Findon’s Il Barbiere rounding out the top three.
