Aldi wants to demolish a Mitre 10 store in Glenunga to pave the way for a new $7.4 million supermarket.
The German supermarket giant has lodged plans with the State Commission Assessment Panel to build an Aldi at 499 Portrush Rd.
A Mitre 10 store currently operates on the site.
Aldi opened its first supermarkets in SA in February 2016 and already has 32 outlets operating.
It has plans underway for stores at Glenelg North, Salisbury, Mawson Lakes, Stirling and Norwood and long-term wants to have 50 supermarkets in SA.
Burnside councillor Julian Carbone said he was “cautiously welcoming” Aldi to Glenunga.
“It’s a win for consumers with increased competition, but a potential devastating loss for our local family-owned businesses in the community,” Cr Carbone said.
“Increased competition is good but we can’t lose businesses that are often described as the soul of the community.”
