It’s easy to think vanity is at the centre of the world of fillers and Botox.
But cosmetic injector Hannah Rivers of SELF Cosmetic Science says it’s about more than just looks when it comes to injectables.
The Hyde Park injector – who is a registered nurse – was voted SA’s best cosmetic injector by readers in the latest Messenger “best of” poll.
Mrs Rivers, 26, says breaking the stigma of injectables is one of the most rewarding parts of her job.
“It’s not just about pumping up lips, it’s actually about making people feel good and empowered,” she said.
“I treated a girl the other day who had broken her jaw as a child and her whole life she didn’t have much of a jaw and she was so self conscious of it.
“We put a bit of filler on her jaw and she could not stop bawling at the results.”
Mrs Rivers has been a nurse for more than seven years and still works part time in the emergency department.
She said its important for potential clients to look into the qualifications of their injectors.
“I’m really big on education as well otherwise people come in and they don’t understand that it is a medical treatment,” she said.
“A lot of people think that it’s just like hair, makeup and beauty and a lot of people don’t realise that we’re actually registered nurses and we have to be registered with the medical board.
“People don’t realise that there are a lot of risks with this work, it’s not as simple as just getting some Botox in your face, you could get a droopy eye or even go blind.”
Mrs Rivers said while lip filler is her most popular treatment, people are starting to turn to alternatives such as non-surgical threading.
Non-surgical facial threads are a less invasive method of using small surgical sutures to lift and support parts of the face.
