A new $3.6 million grandstand at Goodwood Oval will be slightly lower and narrower than first planned, and better complement the neighbouring area, under updated plans.
In a letter to residents and oval users, Unley Council said the two-storey building would be 1.5m lower than initially planned.
Reducing the width would allow cork trees to the side of the proposed building to be protected.
Other changes to the initial blueprint included new clubrooms that will provide “all-weather spectator viewing”, a meeting room overlooking the oval and “flexible” changerooms.
The council said that “revised building materials and colour selection” would “better reflect the local character of the Millswood neighbourhood”.
Those building materials included a mix of red brick terracotta tiles, timber panelling and textured concrete.
Goodwood Football Club’s under-18s women’s team manager Jordan Todd said the new grandstand needed to keep pace with the growth of female participation in the game.
“We have so many girls teams now and the facilities aren’t large enough for the number of teams we have,” Ms Todd said.
“It’s grown every year.
“Under 18 and boys and girls playing on the same day, sharing the same changeroom, isn’t ideal, either.
“They are very much outdated facilities. It will be more than a facelift, it’s well overdue.”
The former state government committed $2.5 million to the grandstand redevelopment in November 2017, with the council signing off on initial concept designs in April.
The 1960s-built grand-stand had been labelled by the oval’s tenants – Goodwood Saints Football Club and Goodwood Cricket Club – as “one of the poorest in Adelaide”.
The two clubs, which have more than 700 members between them, raised $150,000 for the new grandstand.
The updated design plans are out for public comment until December 5.
Unley’s assessment panel is due to make a decision in early 2019.
