UNLEY Council has signed off on concept designs for a $3.6 million upgrade of Goodwood Oval’s grandstand.
The council voted at its meeting last week to apply to its development assessment panel for approval to build the new grandstand at the Millswood oval.
It will also progress with more detailed designs for the structure, which will include four unisex changerooms, two umpires changerooms, medical rooms, a gym and a storage area.
A canteen and public toilet will be on the ground floor, while a function centre and bar looking out over the oval will be on the second storey.
Cr Don Palmer told the meeting it was essential work started on the grandstand as soon as possible to minimise disruptions for the sporting clubs.
“This is a long time coming and is long overdue, but we can’t dillydally and must proceed,” Cr Palmer said.
“We have got to get cracking to get it done within two years.”
The development application will be assessed by the council’s development assessment panel before August.
Work is expected to start in February next year and be finished within 15 months.
The council has allocated $950,000 towards the upgrade, while the State Government has injected $2.5 million.
The 1960s-built grandstand had been labelled by the oval’s tenants — Goodwood Saints Football Club and Goodwood Cricket Club — as “one of the poorest in Adelaide”.
The two clubs, which have more than 700 members between them, have raised $150,000 collectively for the new grandstand.
Goodwood Cricket Club president Jason Scroop welcomed the council’s decision.
“We are not only getting a brand new state-of-the-art facility which is going to last a few generations, but it is really going to suit both clubs really well,” Mr Scroop said.
The final cost of the upgrade will be finalised once a contractor had been selected.
