Glenunga Ave: Second truck in a year destroys Glenunga Ave trees, prompting calls for truck ban

Burnside Council could consider banning trucks from this Glenunga street after a truck taking a shortcut tore down a 100-year-old tree. It is the second similar incident in less than a year.

Trees on a Glenunga street are being destroyed by trucks, residents say, as they plead for something to be done.

A truck crashed into old trees on Glenunga Ave early on Monday morning – the second truck-related incident on the street in a year.

The residential street runs between Glen Osmond and Portrush roads – a major truck route – and is sometimes used as a shortcut.

The latest incident, around 6.30am on Monday morning, involved a milk truck that collided with a tree, bringing it down on the road. The driver has been issued a fine over the incident.

Resident Ryan Piekarski said it was “not the first time” a truck had damaged trees on the street.

“Residents have approached Burnside Council over concerns that ‘no truck’ signs should be erected at the entry to Glenunga Ave as this is not the first incident,” Mr Piekarski said.

“Glenunga Ave is used as a thoroughfare to avoid the traffic lights and roundabouts of Bevington Road.

“How many more 100 years old plus trees have to be destroyed before something is done?”

Last November, a B-double driver became stuck on Glenunga Ave – blocking the street – after following directions from his GPS system.

He knocked over a tree in the process.

A Burnside Council spokeswoman said a traffic engineer was going out to look at the street and would consider whether measures, such as a sign prohibiting trucks, should be implemented.
