A now-vacant nursing home in Goodwood would be bulldozed and replaced with a new $24m facility, under plans lodged with the State Commission Assessment Panel (SCAP).

Eldercare’s new two-storey, 100-bed would replace the more than 50-year-old Kirkholme home on Victoria Street.

Eldercare chief executive Jane Pickering said the old 84-bed home had been an important part of the community throughout its five-decade history.

“Eldercare is committed to providing the best possible care for older people and this is reinforced in our plans to redevelop our Kirkholme site,” Ms Pickering said.

“The existing care buildings are no longer suitable for the provision of high quality care and will be replaced with a new home.

“We have consulted with our existing care residents, staff and other stakeholders and together with our architects, Brown Falconer, created a wonderful design which will be home for up to 100 future older people.

“The project will have a welcoming contemporary feel, with extensive gardens, landscaping and off street parking.”

Plans for the new facility include 41 basement and 19 at-grade parking spaces, hair salon, gym, cafe and allied health consulting rooms.

The 100-beds would be split across both the ground and first floor of the facility and include ensuite bathrooms.

A report by planning firm Ekistics said the facility would cater for “high needs residents”, including approximately 25 per cent of residents with dementia.

“Facilities provided by Eldercare Inc. are designed to promote physical, mental and emotional wellbeing of its residents,” the report said.

“The centre is designed around a central core that provides a centralised service and communal space with ‘residential clusters’ providing a ‘home’ environment with more exclusive private spaces.”

Construction is due to commence in 2022 and the project will be completed in mid-2023.

Plans for the facility are listed for public notification on the SCAP website until April 7.
