Norwood, Payneham & St Peters Mayor Robert Bria is confident a compromise will soon be reached between the council and the Transport Department over a scramble crossing proposed for The Parade.

The council wants to install the crossing at the intersection of The Parade and George St as part of its $8 million masterplan for the popular shopping strip.

However, the department has told the council turning right from The Parade into George St must be banned during peak periods on weekdays if it wants a scramble crossing.

It said this would help ease traffic congestion.

In May, the council approved a draft plan for the area, but preferred the right-hand turn ban be kept off limits.

Mr Bria said this week he was hopeful the impasse would soon be broken.

“We are close to a compromise,” Mr Bria said.

He said the council was waiting for the Transport Department’s updated position before the masterplan was next discussed by elected members.

Premier Steven Marshall said discussions were ongoing with the council to fix the “notorious” intersection.

A Transport Department spokesman said they were working with the council on a solution.

In a letter to NP&SP chief executive Mario Barone, the department said a scramble crossing would increase delays for all road users.

“These expected delays and queuing on The Parade are unacceptable to (the department),” it said.

However, it said a scramble crossing would improve safety for pedestrians.
