German supermarket chain Aldi has lodged new plans for a Portrush Road store after acquiring more land in the area.

The Glenunga site was previously home to a Mitre 10 store and Aldi have since acquired a neighbouring allotment which is currently home to residential flats.

The new plans for the $5.9 million store include a decrease in the size of the overall building area but increase in the retail area of the store by 40sq m to 1227 sqm.

The new plan also includes 90 ground level carparking spaces in place of the previously planned undercroft parking.

“The ALDI application for the Glenunga store now involves additional land which has enabled ALDI to propose an ‘on-grade’ store and carpark,” an Aldi spokesman said.

“We are eager to bring our unique shopping experience to Glenunga and will continue to keep the community updated as our application progresses.”

The supermarket giant initially lodged $7.4 million plans for the Glenunga store in 2019 but they were knocked back by the State Commission Assessment Panel.

At the time, local residents raised concerns about the impact of extra noise and traffic from the development.

“As addressed in the previous application, we have undertaken the appropriate independent engineering assessments to accommodate noise and traffic,” the spokesman said.

In February 2020, Aldi lodged scaled back plans which reduced the overall building size by 194sq m to 1876sq m.

A report prepared by planning firm Ekistics said development plan consent was granted for the site by the Environment, Resources and Development Court in May 2020.

“While this consent is still valid, it has not been enacted as ALDI Stores have now successfully secured the adjoining site at 505 Portrush Road, Glenunga and now seek to lodge a new development application for an ALDI supermarket on the expanded site,” the report said.

“The new development proposal now incorporates at-grade carparking with a more functional and efficient layout.”

Plans for the Glenunga store are available on the State Commission Assessment Panel until March 16.
