Giant international supermarket chain Aldi has revealed plans to build a second store in the Gawler region, under an application lodged with the State Planning Commission.
The proposal for 5-7 Tod Street, Gawler would include the demolition of two existing retail buildings to make way for a development costed at more than $5m.
Located 3km from Aldi’s Evanston outlet, the proposed development would create approximately 25 full time equivalent jobs and create a new 86 space car park – 34 more spaces than the existing site.
Plans were lodged with the commission by Nielsen Architects last month.
However in a statement to The Barossa, Clare & Gawler News, an Aldi spokesperson would not confirm its plans for the site.
“Aldi is always looking for ways to bring our unique shopping experience to locals in South Australia and are therefore currently exploring opportunities in Gawler,” the spokesperson said.
The 5,000sq m site on the corner of Tod and Reid streets is adjacent to a Drakes supermarket, Woolworths and Big W.
Two groups of shops exist with seven businesses occupying them on the land proposed for development.
These include Getta Bargain, Yoga + wellbeing, Gawler Flooring Xtra, Lifeline Shop, SDA Tax & Advisory and the other housing Ben Yi’s Asian Grocer and the Animal Welfare League Thrift shop, which opened in January.
Aldi’s proposal, asks the State Planning Commission to grant consent for the store for seven years, rather than the default two.
The proposal written by Nielsen Architects, says “Aldi is seeking this additional time in order to accommodate a number of existing leases”.
The Category 2 application is open for consultation with the State Planning Commission until March 5.
