Switched on: Council unveils its ‘10 Gig Reasons’ for businesses to invest in Prospect

THE rollout of a 10GB internet connection at four sites along Prospect Rd is a key part of the council’s push to attract new businesses to the area.

ULTRA-FAST internet, the “best mainstreet in SA” and a highly-skilled local workforce are the key pillars in a new Prospect Council push to attract business to the area.

The council last week launched “10 Gig Reasons to Invest in Prospect”, an investment strategy designed to showcase Prospect as a tech-savvy, business-friendly location for commercial enterprise.

The key selling point is the imminent roll out of a 10GB internet connection at four premises on Prospect Rd, including Little City co-working space and the council’s new community centre and library.

Palace Nova Prospect will also be linked to the $156,000 GigCity network, which is being funded through a mix of council and State Government money.

Internet speeds in the precinct will rival those offered by Adelaide City Council’s 10GB network, which Town Hall claims will soon provide city businesses with the fastest uploads and downloads in the world.

Prospect Council’s boast that Prospect Rd is the “best mainstreet in SA”, the district’s proximity to the city and its high number of tech-savvy local workers are also being used as selling points to potential new businesses.

The business push follows a similar pitch to property developers in 2015 which has helped drive a development boom across the inner north.

More than 850 new apartments have been built or are under construction in the area, at a combined value of $210 million, according to council figures.

Prospect business and innovation director Chris Hannaford said the council wanted to encourage businesses in the health, media, defence and security sectors to the area.

“It is all about how we make the shift from an apartment-led revitalisation to both apartment and commercial development,” Mr Hannaford said.

Little City managing director Shaun Lyon told a launch event last week that high-speed internet was “crucial”.

“I get asked the question what will GigCity mean to Little City?,” he said.

“I have no idea who is going to come knocking on the door or how the existing membership base is going to utilise it.

“But one thing is for sure – three years down the track we will be having the conversation of how essential the connection is for our community and how much of a competitive edge it is for Prospect.”
