SA Government broadens its $7.5 million GigCity program to include 15 new metropolitan precincts

More businesses will have access to ultra fast internet - up to 100 times faster than the national average - as part of the State Government’s $7.5 million GigCity program.

MORE businesses will have access to ultra-fast internet – up to 100 times faster than the national average – as part of the State Government’s $7.5 million GigCity program.

The fibre network has been expanded to 15 additional precincts across metropolitan Adelaide, including the Northern Adelaide Food Park and North Terrace cultural precinct.

Tenants in the precincts can sign up for service plans starting from $49.90 per month, which the SA Government said was more affordable than what was currently available on the market.

The plan offers the higher speeds through its gigabit-per-second SABREnet network.

Science and Information Minister Kyam Maher said the ultra-fast internet was essential for hi-tech and data-heavy businesses, which would in turn create jobs.

“Our GigCity network has already connected more than 106 businesses who are using high-speed internet to develop new ideas, create new opportunities for collaboration and drive job creation,” he said.

The new GigCity precincts include the Allianz Centre, Noarlunga Innovation Centre and the Town of Gawler Business Innovation Hub.

The government was also working with Whyalla City Council, Mount Gambier City Council and UniSA to explore opportunities to extend the network to both regional cities.

The fibre network is already available at university buildings, on North Tce, St Paul’s Creative Centre, the Stretton Centre, Tonsley Innovation Precinct, Technology Park at Mawson Lakes and Osborne Naval Shipbuilding Precinct.
