Separated bikeways project delayed a second time

Separate bike lanes to keep cyclists safe have been planned since 2016 – now Adelaide City Council has extended its construction deadline a second time.

THE completion date of a $12 million project to help cyclists safely get through the CBD remains under a cloud, with Adelaide City Council delaying work a second time.

The council will tonight discuss pushing the deadline for the North-South and East-West separated bikeways project out until June 30, 2021 after missing this year’s June deadline.

The delay has been put down to CBD developments holding up construction and plans not being finalised.

The State Government and council have each committed $6 million towards the project.

Adelaide City Council planning, design and development associate director Shanti Ditter was unable to confirm a completion date.

“There is a large amount of private development holding up the North-South section of the City Bikeways project,” Ms Ditter said.

“This includes works on The Adelaidean, Lot Fourteen, a hotel on the south eastern corner of North Tce and Frome Rd and student accommodation on the corner of Frome St and North Tce.

“Councillors will likely discuss options for the East-West Bikeway in the new year.”

The plans for the bikeways have been in the pipeline since July 2016, with the first deadline set at June 2018.

That was missed and the funding was pushed out to 2019.

The East-West bikeway links Dequetteville Tce and West Tce, while the North-South connects the existing Rugby/Porter Bikeway in Unley to the Braund Road Bike Boulevard in Prospect.

Lord Mayor Sandy Verschoor said the project was “well overdue” and she was committed to completing the project.

“I am hoping that we move a little bit faster,” Ms Verschoor said.

Transport Minister Stephan Knoll said the government “has the funding on the table” for the project.

In April, The Advertiser reported that separated bike lanes were again being considered for Pirie and Waymouth streets, 18 months after Adelaide City Council deemed the roads too narrow for the East-West Bikeway project.
