A drug dealer’s decision to make some extra cash by delivering meth to her friends in a country town backfired and landed her a court date.

The Adelaide District Court heard Rebecca Jane Haggerty’s three children witnessed police uncover her drug dealing business when they attended her Coober Pedy address on July 18, 2019.

“At the time police had information that you were selling methamphetamine and cannabis from this address,” Judge Paul Slattery said during sentencing.

The 40 year old woman was at home and her three young children were also present when police found marijuana, 5.7g of crystals, containing 4.2g of methamphetamine and drug utensils.

“You brought it to Coober Pedy because you used it yourself and could not get it in the town,” Judge Slattery said.

Police analysed Haggerty’s phone and found drug dealing messages.

“You now admit that you had been engaged in this offending for a period of two to three months,” Judge Slattery said.

Haggerty, of Coober Pedy, had previously pleaded guilty to drug trafficking.

The court heard the mother-of-four felt lonely and depressed when her children were living with their father.

“When the children were with their father you would travel to Adelaide to see family and friends, some of whom were methamphetamine users and this is how you came to use methamphetamine yourself,” Judge Slattery said.

Haggerty, who was on Centrelink, agreed to bring methamphetamine back to her friends in Coober Pedy.

“Your counsel submitted that you only trafficked methamphetamine back to Coober Pedy on less than 10 occasions,” Judge Slattery said.

The court heard Haggerty had made positive steps to combat her drug addiction.

“I accept that your offending was primarily motivated by your need to fund your own addiction to methamphetamine,” Judge Slattery said.

Judge Slattery sentenced Haggerty to three years and nine months jail, with a non-parole period of two years and five months.

It was suspended on a two year good behaviour bond for $500, with supervision for one year.
