The city’s beach volleyball court will move to Bonython Park, clearing the way for Adelaide City Council to sell a prime piece of CBD real estate.
Former netball courts in the southwestern parklands – currently used as carparking – will be converted into a new beach volleyball set-up.
It means the old site, at the corner of Pirie and Frome streets, can be sold off for development as part of a fire sale of council assets.
The plan has been given the blessing of the Adelaide Park Lands Authority, which had to give approval for the proposal.
It will also open up the possibility of Bonython Park becoming home to a “youth activity hub”.
The new space – visible from Port Road – will be given to Volleyball South Australia on a lease.
They will be responsible for all costs involved in converting the site into sand courts.
A State Government grant would fund its ongoing use and maintenance.
It will include four volleyball courts, two beach soccer pitches, changerooms, toilets and a kiosk.
The site was one of three in the parklands that were considered, with the others at Gladys Elphick Park, behind Karen Rolton Oval, and King Rodney Park, on Bartels Road.
A report by council staff said the Bonython Park side met “the criteria set out by council, is large enough to facilitate some limited carparking for beach volleyball participants, accommodate a range of recreation experiences and enhance the Park Lands edge to create an improved arrival into (the park).
The city beach volleyball courts and a neighbouring council-owned carpark will be sold to help create a “future fund” for Adelaide City Council as it grapples with nearly $100 million of debt.
Another seven secret sites are also expected to be sold.
