Rod Rose was regarded by local traders as the premier publican of Hindley St.
And, now his family are determined to keep his West End legacy going after his death last week, aged 74.
After moving to Adelaide in 1988, Mr Rose first entered the West End strip when he opened Tilt in 1994.
He then turned publican, operating the Berkley Hotel (now the Black Bull) and Metro (Woolshed).
Then followed two of the city’s most popular venues, the HQ Complex at 1 North Tce - consistently judged Adelaide’s number one nightclub - and the CBD’s landmark sports viewing venue the Rosemont Hotel - which will shut later this month after the expiry of its long-term lease.
Australian Hotels Association SA general manager Ian Horne said Mr Rose would be a “great loss” to Adelaide.
“He was iconic in the industry and instrumental in the West End,” he said.
“Few of them come along and he will be greatly missed. He made a significant contribution to the wellbeing of the West End, live music and the night time economy.”
But the Rose legacy won’t be gone from the Adelaide pub scene with children Steve, Dave and Gabby determined to build on their father’s work.
“His legacy is now passed on to his family,” Dave said.
The many thousands who ventured through the doors of the Rosemont over the years to watch sport at all hours of the day now have a chance to own a piece of the iconic venue.
A huge garage sale will be held next week on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Stephen said everything from sporting memorabilia to bar paraphernalia and promo gear would be up for sale.
“Anything that isn’t connected. It’s been an iconic sports bar for 20 years.”
While the future of the Hindley St building that housed the Rosemont is unknown, sports fans hoping to get their fix after this month only need to go across the road to the new HQ Complex – after it relocated from North Tce – with the “Front Bar” setting up downstairs in the building.
The Rosemont will still trade until its closure at the end of this month, from 4pm to late on Thursdays, Friday and Saturdays.
