Hugh Sheridan’s big gesture to help injured wildlife

Watching Australia burn from afar was “heartbreaking” for Hugh Sheridan, so he decided to raise money to help cuddly creatures affected by the fires.

Watching Kangaroo Island and other parts of Australia go up in flames was devastating for homegrown talent Hugh Sheridan.

The actor, musician and TV presenter, who is based in Los Angeles, says each night he went to bed hoping the situation would be better in the morning, but more often than not it was “a whole lot worse”.

“It was very heartbreaking to watch it all unfold and not be home (in Australia),” Sheridan, 34, says. “The news was just shots of Australia on fire … it really broke my heart.”

To help with bushfire recovery efforts, Sheridan has raised almost $30,000 through charity performances in LA to support animals injured in bushfires across Australia, with $14,195 going towards Adelaide Koala & Wildlife Hospital in Plympton.

He raised a further $14,195 for Animals Australia and contributed to G’Day LA’s fundraising efforts.

Sheridan is bringing back The California Crooners Club to the Adelaide Fringe this year, and will also debut solo show Hugh Sheridan Unplugged.

He describes Unplugged as a look into his life, performing some of his own songs and others that inspire him.

Sheridan will share personal stories in the unscripted show and, for the first time, will open up about how it felt when his younger brother, Zachary, was lost and later found in the 2015 Nepal Earthquake

“It’s the first time I’ve done a show where I get to tell personal stories and share my life so far with a soundtrack that has strong meaning for me,” he says.

“I’m sure will resonate with the community.”

The California Crooners Club is on until Sunday, February 16. Unplugged starts Friday, February 28 until Saturday, March 14. Details: adelaidefringe.com.au
